Obuchi Sasaba best time 2024
“Obuchi Sasaba” is a tea plantation located in the Daibuchi area at the southern foothills of Mount Fuji in Fuji City, Shizuoka Prefecture. This location is surrounded by forests and isolated from artificial structures such as nearby houses and utility poles.
Preserving a traditional landscape, the scenic photographs taken here have been used in various places, including the Shizuoka Prefectural Office, Mount Fuji Shizuoka Airport, and JR Tokai’s announcements for Shizuoka Prefecture. It truly represents the picturesque combination of Mount Fuji and tea plantations, making it a renowned scenic spot representing Japan.
The southern foothills of Mount Fuji have been a prosperous region for tea cultivation since the Edo period, as depicted in the ukiyo-e print “Fujisan at the Kakukazute Tea Plantation in Suruga Province” by the famous ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai from his series “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji.” Kakukazute refers to the Daibuchi area, just slightly south of Sasaba. While Hokusai did not reach Sasaba, the landscape here remains almost unchanged since his time.
Post-war developments, including increased residential areas, mechanization of farmlands, and aging populations leading to abandoned lands, have diminished the nostalgic scenery centered around tea plantations. However, Sasaba still provides a fortunate opportunity to witness this traditional landscape.
Experience the majestic Mount Fuji, Japan’s renowned peak, and the cultural significance of tea at Daibuchi Sasaba.
