Ohara Matsuri 2024
The “Ohara Festival” (Ohara Matsuri) is an annual event held in Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, taking place on November 2nd and 3rd each year. It is well-known as a fall tradition in Kagoshima City and is recognized as one of the “Three Great Festivals of Kagoshima Prefecture.”
The festival originated in 1949 as a celebration of the 60th anniversary of Kagoshima City’s municipal status. It has grown to become the largest festival in southern Kyushu, with approximately 20,000 participants in the main event in 2023.
The Ohara Festival features various events, with the highlight being the “Sodori” or collective dance, where participants dance to representative Kagoshima folk songs such as “Ohara Bushi,” “Kagoshima Hanya Bushi,” and “Shibuya Ondo.” The festival includes festivities over two days, with a pre-festival known as the “Night Festival” and the main event where around 20,000 people participate in the collective dance.
