Oita Tanabata Festival 2024
The Oita Tanabata Festival (Oita Tanabata Matsuri) is a summer festival held annually in Oita City, Oita Prefecture, on the first weekend of August. The event took place in 2024 from August 2nd (Friday) to August 3rd (Saturday).
In the central shopping districts of Oita City, decorations for the Star Festival adorn the streets. Events such as the “Funai Pachin” parade, featuring floats and dance teams, take place during the festival. The term “Funai Pachin” comes from the warrior illustrations on the floats, reminiscent of Aomori’s Nebuta Festival, and the name is inspired by the “pachin” sound, similar to the clapping of traditional toy figures (menko).
On the final day, August 6th, the “Oita Joint Newspaper Smile Fireworks Project” was held, launching a surprise display of 305 fireworks from five locations within Oita City.
The Oita Tanabata Festival is a summer tradition in Oita City, attracting over 400,000 visitors each year. It stands as the city’s largest and most significant summer festival.
