Otabi Festival Ishikawa 2024
お旅まつり(Otabi Matsuri) is an annual spring festival held in Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, spanning three days from the second Friday to Sunday in May. The festival takes place at the Uhashi Shrine (Osuwa-san) and Motoorihie Shrine (Sannosan), featuring the traditional float parade known for its child kabuki performances.
Overview:
Otabi Matsuri is one of the remaining eight locations in Japan where the traditional float parade with child kabuki performances is preserved. Since 1951, the festival has been held annually, with two districts taking turns to showcase child kabuki on the floats. Originally, all districts participated in the event. It is said to have been initiated by Maeda Toshinaga, the lord of the Kaga Domain, who was inspired by witnessing the Gion Matsuri in Kyoto during the early Edo period. As a related event, the “National Child Kabuki Festival in Komatsu” started in 1999 (changed its name to “Japan Children’s Kabuki Festival in Komatsu” in 2018) takes place in the week leading up to the Otabi Matsuri.
