Oyama senmaida best time to see 2024

The best viewing times for Oyama Senmaida in Kamogawa City, Chiba Prefecture, are generally around May to June when planting begins, and August to September during the harvest. Additionally, it is recommended to visit during September when red spider lilies bloom and during the “Hotaru Kagari Hi Matsuri” (Firefly Illumination Festival) held in July.

Oyama Senmaida consists of 375 terraced rice fields arranged in a staircase pattern on a steep slope measuring 32,000 square meters. It has been selected as one of “Japan’s Top 100 Terraced Rice Fields.” It is the only terraced rice field in Japan where rainwater cultivation is practiced, providing a habitat for various precious ecosystems.

Every year in October, on the last Saturday and Sunday, Oyama Senmaida hosts the “Terraced Rice Fields Night Festival.” The fields are illuminated with 3,000 torches and 10,000 LED candles, creating a fantastical and enchanting scene.

Oyama Senmaida is the only terraced rice field in Japan where rainwater cultivation is practiced, showcasing diverse and precious ecosystems.
