Ryoma festival 2024

龍馬まつり (Ryoma Matsuri) is a festival that honors the achievements of Sakamoto Ryoma, a hero of the Bakumatsu and Meiji Restoration period. The festival is held annually in Katsurahama Park in Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture, usually on a Sunday near November 15th, which is Ryoma’s birthday. In 2023, the festival marked its 50th edition.

In addition to the festival in Katsurahama, a Ryoma Matsuri is also held at the Reizan Gokoku Shrine in Kyoto. This festival traces its origins back to 1906 when a special festival organized by enthusiasts from Kochi Prefecture living in Kyoto marked the beginning of the annual event. Since November 15, 1916, both the Kochi-Kyoto Friendship Association and the Kyoto Kochi People’s Association have been organizing the festival annually.

During the Ryoma Matsuri, various events take place, such as the construction of a tower beside the Ryoma statue, Kochi Yosakoi dance performances, and the Ryoma Omotesai ceremony. There are also stalls and children’s carnival games set up for visitors to enjoy.
