Sanno Festival (Hie Shrine Spring Festival) 2024
山王まつり(San’no Matsuri or Yamao Matsuri), the annual spring festival of the Hie Shrine, is held from May 31st to June 2nd in Yamaocho, Toyama City, Toyama Prefecture. The Hie Shrine is affectionately known as “San’no-san,” and the Yamao Matsuri is celebrated as the spring festival of “San’no-san.”
During the festival, mikoshi (portable shrines) and lion dances parade through the eastern part of the town. In 2023, the lion dance procession returned to the town after a four-year hiatus, and the festival boasted over 400 stalls.
The Yamao Matsuri is the most significant festival for the Hie Shrine, representing a crucial event in its annual calendar. It is one of the grandest and most beloved festivals in Toyama City, often referred to locally as “San’no-san (han).”
