Shirakawago best season when 2024

白川郷 (Shirakawa-go) is a place where you can enjoy beautiful landscapes throughout the changing seasons, with autumn and winter being particularly recommended.

【Autumn】
As September arrives, temperatures drop, and the rice fields are filled with golden rice. From mid-October to mid-November, it’s the season of autumn leaves, and the entire village is adorned in the beautiful colors of fall. Towards the end of October and the beginning of November, an event called “Icchou Housui” takes place, where water is poured over the thatched roofs of houses in Shirakawa-go, creating a spectacular scene.

【Winter】
Shirakawa-go is known for heavy snowfall, and in winter, the surrounding mountains and the gassho-zukuri village are covered in snow, creating a stunning winter wonderland. From mid-December to the end of February, the village hosts the “Shirakawa-go Illumination” event. During mid-January to mid-February, on select days, the thatched-roof houses, adorned with snow, are illuminated, offering a fantastical and beautiful spectacle.

In summer, the surrounding mountains and rice fields are covered in vibrant green, and from early to mid-July, you can enjoy the enchanting lights of fireflies at night. Shirakawa-go, with its charms throughout the seasons, is a place where you can savor different kinds of beauty with each visit.
