Shiratori Odori 2024
“Shirasu-no-Haiden Odori” is an annual Bon dance held in Shirasu Town, Gifu Prefecture, primarily in late August. It has been performed since the mid-Edo period and is considered the origin of the Bon dance.
Key features of Shirasu-no-Haiden Odori include:
- Participants dance wearing geta (wooden clogs).
- There is no musical accompaniment such as shamisen or taiko drums.
- The rhythm of the dance is set by the sound of geta shoes striking the wooden floor of the haiden (worship hall).
- Participants dance under Kiriko lanterns.
- In the evening, large cut glass lanterns are hung in the haiden of the shrine.
Shirasu-no-Haiden Odori is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Gifu Prefecture and a Designated Intangible Folk Cultural Property of the Nation.
The traditional event of Shirasu Town, “Shirasu Odori,” takes place over 21 nights from around July 20 (Origin Festival) to late September (Odori Nomesaki), mainly on Saturdays and Sundays. In 2023, it will be held from July 9 (Sunday) to September 24 (Sunday).
