Shoro Nagashi (Spirit Boat Procession) 2025
Shōrō Nagashi is a traditional ceremony held during the Obon season in various parts of Nagasaki Prefecture, some areas in Kumamoto Prefecture, and Saga City. The event is dedicated to mourning and sending off the spirits of the deceased.
Rooted in Buddhist tradition, the ceremony involves launching elaborately decorated spirit boats (shōrōbune), especially in Nagasaki City. Firecrackers and solemn parades are part of this emotional and vibrant event. Inland areas like Hasami Town may not follow this custom, but similar traditions exist in cities like Kumamoto and Saga.
