Shurijo Castle Festival 2024
The Ryukyu Kingdom Festival Shuri is one of the three major festivals in Naha where visitors can experience the history and culture of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Held annually for several days, with a focus on November 3rd (Culture Day), the festival takes place in Shurijo Park.
The origins of the Ryukyu Kingdom Festival Shuri can be traced back to 1960 when it began as an “Education Festival.” The event was initiated to preserve and pass on traditional culture, and in 2023, it celebrated its 58th edition.
A major highlight of the Ryukyu Kingdom Festival Shuri is the traditional procession, known as the “Koshiki Gyoretsu” or Ancient Procession. This reenacts the “Sankake Sai,” a historical event where the Ryukyu king visited three temples in Shurijo, praying for the peace and prosperity of the kingdom.
To enhance enthusiasm for the reconstruction of Shurijo Castle, the festival changed its name from “Shurijo Festival” to “Shurijo Reconstruction Festival” until the completion of the main hall in the 8th year of Reiwa (approximately 2036).
