Takachiho gorge Autumn leaves When 2024

The collaboration of waterfalls and autumn leaves at Takachiho Gorge offers a refined and elegant experience. Takachiho Gorge, one of the prominent tourist destinations in the prefecture, was formed by the rapid cooling of volcanic ash flows from Mount Aso along the Gokase River, creating a canyon with steep cliffs featuring columnar jointing. In autumn, the rugged V-shaped gorge is adorned with gentle hues of Japanese maple and other deciduous trees.

Typically, the foliage starts to change colors from mid-November, and through late November, the area around the Oonokoro Pond and the view of the renowned Manai Falls, selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls, become particularly vibrant in red. Viewing Manai Falls from the Ohashi bridge and the waterfall observation platform during this period is a spectacular point for autumn leaves.

One of the highlights is the illumination of the waterfall until 22:00, creating a mesmerizing and enchanting atmosphere different from the daytime, allowing visitors to enjoy the autumn foliage in a magical setting.
