Tsuwano Bon Odori 2025
Tsuwano Bon Odori, designated as an intangible cultural asset of the prefecture, is an elegant traditional dance rooted in Nenbutsu dance. It is said that Kamei Korenori, the father of the first feudal lord, devised the costumes, movements, and music to conquer enemy castles.
The dancers wear distinctive attire: black masks, white headbands with fans tucked in, white kimono sleeves, black trousers, white tabi socks, and straw sandals. Bells attached to the long sleeves jingle softly with each dance step, adding a graceful atmosphere.
On August 10, the “Yanagi Mairi” ceremony is held on Shinchō Street to mark the start of the Bon Odori season, leading up to the grandest event, the “Tonomachi Bon Odori Festival” on August 15. The dance is performed across 13 districts in the old Tsuwano town.
This dance, commemorating a strategic victory, has been performed in Tsuwano continuously since Kamei Masanori became lord in 1617.
