Tsuwano’s Obon Dance 2024

津和野踊り (Tsuwano Odori) is a Bon dance performed in Tsuwano Town in the Iwami region of Shimane Prefecture. Designated as an intangible folk cultural asset of the prefecture, it is a form of Nembutsu Odori, a traditional Buddhist dance, preserving an ancient style dating back to the Muromachi period.

Legend has it that Tsuwano Odori was devised by the father of the first feudal lord, Kamei Sōnori, to capture an enemy castle. Sōnori allegedly sent dancers into the enemy castle under the guise of a performance, taking advantage of the reduced guard as the enemy came out to watch. This strategic maneuver led to a surprise attack and victory. Tsuwano Odori is said to have originated as a dance commemorating this clever military success, performed during the Bon festival.

During Tsuwano Odori, both men and women wear distinctive costumes: a black mask, a white headband, and a white long-sleeved kimono. The dance unfolds at a leisurely pace against the backdrop of dimly lit streets, accompanied by traditional and elegant musical accompaniment.

Tsuwano Odori is an annual event, taking place every year on August 15th.
