Unzen Autumn leaves When 2024

The breathtaking beauty of the mountains adorned with vibrant colors Unzen is renowned for hosting over 120 different types of foliage, making it a typical representative of autumn foliage in western Japan. This entire area, especially the broadleaf forest of Mt. Fugen, is designated as a national natural monument. In late October, the vivid contrast between the lush greens of fir and hemlock trees and the red hues of Japanese maple and other plants creates a spectacular landscape fittingly called “Nishiki-shu” (brocade). Additionally, species like Komine kaede (Japanese maple), Urihada kaede, Kochiwa kaede, Uri kaede, and Dodan tsutsuji beautifully display yellow and red autumn foliage.

Points of Interest You can enjoy the scenery from the mountaintops of various peaks such as Mt. Fugen and Mt. Myokendake, as well as from the Nita Pass Observation Deck. The panoramic view from the summit of Mt. Kunimidake is particularly stunning. Moreover, you can easily ascend to the 1,333-meter-high Mt. Myokendake from the Nita Pass parking lot using the Unzen Ropeway. Walking through the vast landscape at an altitude of 1,300 meters offers an outstanding view of the surroundings, especially from Mt. Kunimidake.
