Yamaguchi Gion Festival 2024
The Yamaguchi Gion Festival is an annual traditional festival that originated during the Muromachi period when the Ouchi clan brought the Gion Matsuri from Kyoto to the Yatsushiro Shrine. The festival has deep historical roots and is celebrated with various events.
On the first day, there is a dedication of the “sagi no mai” (heron dance) at the Yatsushiro Shrine. The final day features the “Gyokosai,” where the deity is returned from the temporary lodging to the Yatsushiro Shrine.
On the middle day, there is a “citizen’s dance” that adds vibrant colors to the festival.
Here are some key events and their dates:
- 20th: Gyokosai (Procession of the deity)
- 24th: Citizen’s Dance
- 27th: Gyokosai (Return of the deity)
Note: Due to infection prevention measures, the portable shrines will be transported by trucks.
