Yanai Goldfish Lantern Festival 2024
The Yanai Kingyo Chochin Festival is a major summer event held annually on August 13th in Yanai City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It showcases the traditional folk craft of Yanai, the “Kingyo Chochin” (goldfish lantern), and is considered one of the “Three Great Festivals of Yanai.”
In 2023, the festival returned to its regular scale after a hiatus of four years, drawing a crowd of approximately 86,000 people. Key highlights of the festival include the parade of the “Kingyo Nebuta,” featuring large goldfish lanterns mounted on floats, and the “Kingyo Chochin Odori” (goldfish lantern dance).
The central area of the city, where the festival takes place, is adorned with around 4,000 Kingyo Chochin lanterns, with approximately 2,500 of them illuminated. The gentle glow emanating from the lanterns creates a magical and enchanting atmosphere throughout the festival venue.
