Yatsushiro Myoken Festival 2024
Yatsushiro Myōken Festival, held annually on November 22nd and 23rd at Yatsushiro Shrine (Myoken Shrine) in Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture, is a grand autumn festival with a history of approximately 380 years. It is recognized as one of the three major festivals in Kyushu.
The festival is rooted in the belief and worship of Myoken, a deity personifying the North Star and the Big Dipper. On the festival days, a vibrant procession featuring various elements such as a large turtle-shaped float symbolizing Myoken’s divine vehicle, ornate Kasahoko floats, wooden horses, lions, and dancers portraying mythical characters parades through the city, accompanying the portable shrine.
The divine procession of the Yatsushiro Myoken Festival covers a distance of approximately 6 kilometers from the Shioya Hachimangu Shrine to Yatsushiro Shrine, with around 1,700 participants. On November 22nd, there is the divine procession (Omorashi) and the eve festival called “Goya,” while on the 23rd, the divine procession (Oage) takes place.
In recognition of its cultural significance, the Yatsushiro Myoken Festival was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016.
