Yosakoi festival 2024
よさこい祭り (Yosakoi Matsuri) is a festival held annually in Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture, spanning four days from August 9th (pre-festival) to August 12th (post-festival and national competition). The festival takes place across nine competition venues and seven dance stages within the city, involving approximately 200 teams and around 18,000 dancers who perform while playing naruko, a type of clapper.
The Yosakoi Matsuri originated in August 1954, initiated by the Kochi Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It began as an effort to dispel the economic downturn at the time and uplift the spirits of the citizens. Since its inception, the festival has grown significantly. The participation, which started with 21 teams and 750 people, expanded to around 214 teams and approximately 20,000 participants during the 60th edition in 2013.
The main feature of the Yosakoi Matsuri is a parade-style performance with regional cars leading the way, and participants dancing while advancing. Over the four days, the festival attracts a total attendance of approximately one million people.
