Yotsuya rice terraces 2024 (Nagoya)

The picturesque landscape of Japan, where people and nature coexist in a fairy-tale-like setting.

Spread across the slopes of Mt. Kurikake, a beautiful terraced rice field that was cultivated approximately 400 years ago graces the mountain village. Stone-built terraced fields, ranging from 220 to 420 meters in elevation, are still actively cultivated by 20 farming households, working approximately 420 fields (compared to the peak of 1296 fields). The farmers of the region, driven by a sense of mission, have diligently preserved this remarkable legacy left by their ancestors, refusing to let it erode with time.

The crystal-clear water that flows gently from the mountainside remains unperturbed even during heavy rainfall. The terraced fields, surrounded by water and greenery, serve as habitats for various flora and fauna. Like a scene from a fairy tale, this original Japanese landscape breathes with the ongoing harmony between people and nature.
