Zuihoden Autumn leaves When 2024
The Zuihoden, located in Aoba Ward, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, is the mausoleum (otamaya) where Date Masamune, the founder of the Sendai Domain, rests. Originally constructed in 1637 and designated as a national treasure in 1931, it was unfortunately destroyed during the war. The current structure is a reconstruction completed in 1979. Every year around late November, vibrant autumn colors, including bright red Japanese maples (Oomomiji) and yellow-orange Irohamomiji, adorn the surroundings. The collaboration of colorful maples and the elegant Momoyama-style architecture enhances the charm of Zuihoden’s autumn foliage.
During the autumn foliage event, from November 18th (Saturday) to November 26th (Sunday), a special illumination will be held from 15:30 to 16:50. On weekends and holidays during this period, the opening hours will be extended until 19:00, featuring installations like lanterns with family crests and traditional Japanese umbrellas. Additionally, on certain days, the Date Clan warriors will conduct a special welcoming procession.
Key Attractions: Zuihoden comprises the main hall, worship hall, Chinese gate, altar gate, and Nirvana gate, all decorated in the luxurious and flamboyant style of the Momoyama cultural period. The site also includes the mausoleums for the second and third generations, along with a museum showcasing excavation research materials.
