Noboribetsu Hell Festival 2026

The Noboribetsu Hell Festival (Noboribetsu Jigoku Matsuri) is based on a local legend that on the last Saturday and Sunday of August each year, the lid of the “hell cauldron” in Noboribetsu Onsen’s Hell Valley opens, and King Enma arrives at the hot-spring town accompanied by demons.
The festival features Noboribetsu Taiko drums, an oni (demon) portable shrine carried by students of Noboribetsu Junior High School, bear dances, and oni dances. 登別太鼓や登別市立登別中学校の生徒が担ぐ鬼みこしや熊舞、鬼踊りなどがある。
