Yokote Snow Festival 2026
The Yokote Snow Festival is held every February in the central district of Yokote City, Akita Prefecture. It consists of three elements: the Kamakura (snow huts) dedicated to the water deity during the Little New Year (mid-February), the Bonden ritual (February 16–17), also part of the Little New Year celebrations, and snow sculptures (“snow art”).
The Kamakura and Bonden are often contrasted as “the quiet Kamakura” versus “the dynamic Bonden.”
The festival dates are fixed because the Bonden ritual is held on February 17, the festival day of Asahioka Shrine, and the Kamakura is inseparable from the Bonden tradition.
However, to secure participants and attract tourists, from 2026 to 2029, the Kamakura dates will be experimentally moved to the second Friday and Saturday of February.
