Yamagata Hanagasa Festival 2026

The Hanagasa Festival is a traditional Japanese event in which participants dance through the streets holding hanagasa—woven sedge hats decorated with red flowers—while performing the Hanagasa Ondo dance. Although the festival is held in several locations within Yamagata Prefecture, the version most widely known is the Yamagata Hanagasa Festival, held every August in Yamagata City.
In addition, some people refer to the four major festivals of Tohoku as the “Four Great Festivals of Tohoku,” which include the prewar-established Three Great Festivals of Tohoku plus the postwar-originated and later popularized Yamagata Hanagasa Festival.
