Fukushima Waraji Festival 2026
The Fukushima Waraji Festival traces its origins back to the winter ritual Shinobu Sanzan Akatsuki Mairi, which has continued since the Edo period. Since 1970 (Shōwa 45), it has been held separately as a summer festival.
It takes place in early August, where participants parade through the streets carrying Japan’s largest straw sandal (waraji). The giant waraji dedicated to Haguro Shrine forms a pair with the one offered during the February Shinobu Sanzan Akatsuki Mairi, symbolizing prayers for strong and healthy legs.
Although once considered one of Fukushima Prefecture’s representative festivals, it was relatively unknown outside the region due to being overshadowed by the Three Great Festivals of Tohoku.
However, after the Great East Japan Earthquake, it became part of the Tohoku Rokkon Festival, and is now counted among the Six Great Festivals of Tohoku.
