Gansan Daishi Exorcism Grand Festival 2026
At Ashikaga’s Yakuyoke Daishi Temple, an exorcism grand festival is held during the New Year.
“Gansan Daishi” refers to Jiei Daishi (monastic name: Ryogen), the 18th head monk of Mt. Hiei.
He passed away on January 3rd, 985, and has since been known as “Gansan Daishi.”
He is the founder of the omikuji (fortune slip) and is also called the “Exorcism Daishi” or “Horned Daishi.”
It is said that he once reflected his own figure in a mirror and vowed: “Wherever my image is placed, no demons or misfortune shall come.”
From this, the custom arose of placing his protective talisman on household doors during the New Year.
