Hanawa Bayashi 2024
About Hanawa Bayashi
“Hanawabayashi” is a festival that takes place as part of the annual celebration at Saki Inari Shrine, located about 3.5 kilometers east of the urban area. This festival, known as “Sairei Bayashi” (Festival Music), has been passed down through the years as a cherished tradition of the Hanawa community.
The festival is associated with various names such as “Hanawa Matsuri” (Hanawa Festival), “Inari Jinja Saiten” (Inari Shrine Festival), “Honen Matsuri” (Harvest Festival), “Honen Hanawa Matsuri” (Harvest Hanawa Festival), and simply “Hanawa Matsuri.” Throughout its long history, the local people have continued to uphold and pass down the festival, accompanied by lively festival music.
Saki Inari Shrine’s festival, where “Hanawabayashi” is performed, has roots that extend far back into the past. The exact origins of when festival music was first dedicated to the shrine are not certain, but some of the traditional musical pieces associated with the festival are believed to have been passed down since the early Edo period or even earlier.
The festival involves the presentation of traditional festival music, or “o-hayashi,” during the shrine celebrations. The term “Hanawabayashi” literally translates to “flower circle music,” and it signifies the vibrant and dynamic nature of the music performed during the festivities. The festival, with its rich history and cultural significance, continues to be a meaningful and festive event for both participants and spectators alike.
