Sendai Tanabata Matsuri 2024
The Sendai Tanabata Matsuri, or Sendai Star Festival, is a traditional event with roots dating back to the era of Date Masamune, the founder of the Date clan. Today, it is renowned nationwide for combining the elegance of traditional Japanese star festivals with the opulent and luxurious decorations.
Originally, Tanabata festivals were observed across the country on the 7th day of the 7th month of the lunar calendar. The Sendai Tanabata Matsuri, in order to align with the seasonal atmosphere, shifted to the Gregorian calendar, taking place from August 6th to 8th. This festival stands out for its vibrant decorations, known as “sasakazari,” which are colorful paper streamers adorned with various ornaments, and bamboo branches. These decorations symbolize the wishes and hopes of people, particularly in relation to the celestial lovers Orihime (Vega) and Hikoboshi (Altair) who, according to legend, meet once a year on the night of Tanabata.
