Itabashi Fire works fes 2024
The Itabashi Fireworks Festival (Itabashi Hanabi Taikai) is an annual fireworks event held in August along the Arakawa Riverbank upstream of the Toda Bridge in Itabashi Ward, Tokyo.
History:
The historical context of Itabashi is described in the “Keicho Kenbunshu” as follows: “In the past, looking from Kanda Hara to Itabashi in the vicinity of Edo, there were no bamboo or trees; it was all fields.” In the early Edo period, the area was a vast wilderness. In August of the 18th year of the Tensho era (1590), when Tokugawa Ieyasu entered Edo as the ruler of the Kanto region, Edo was a quiet post town. Ieyasu strengthened the defenses of Edo Castle by allocating strategic land and residences. According to the bakufu’s Sankin Kotai system, daimyo (feudal lords) alternately lived in Edo and their home provinces each year. The bakufu assigned them main residences near Edo Castle, secondary residences according to their status, and additional residences farther from the city center.
The Maeda clan, the lords of Kanazawa in Kaga Province, held a high rank just below the three Tokugawa branches. Their main residence was in Hongo, and their secondary residence was in Shimo-Itabashi-juku (Lower Itabashi Post Town) along the Nakasendo highway. The secondary residence was granted 60,000 tsubo (approx. 50 acres) in the second month of the Enpō era (1679) and expanded to 217,900 tsubo (approx. 180 acres) in the third year of the Tenna era (1683). The area extended from the present-day Itabashi Rokuchome and Nanachome to the Ishikawa River.
