The Aoi Festival　2026

The Aoi Festival, formally known as the Kamo Festival, is an annual shrine festival held on May 15 (the Day of the Rooster in the fourth month of the lunar calendar) at Kamomioya Shrine (Shimogamo Shrine) and Kamowakeikazuchi Shrine (Kamigamo Shrine) in Kyoto City. It is also referred to as the “Northern Festival,” in contrast to the “Southern Festival” of Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine. During the Heian period, the term “festival” commonly referred specifically to the Kamo Festival.
