Adachi no hanabi 2024
足立の花火 (Adachi no Hanabi) is a fireworks festival held in Adachi Ward, Tokyo, Japan. The event takes place along the Arakawa Riverbank.
Overview:
Officially titled “The ○th Adachi Fireworks” (with a number in place of ○), it is commonly referred to as “Adachi no Hanabi Taikai” (足立の花火大会), where Taikai means fireworks festival. The official name has been “Adachi no Hanabi” since the 30th edition in 2008.
Traditionally, the festival was held on the Thursday two days before the last Saturday of July. However, following the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, the organizers decided to hold the event in October. This schedule adjustment continued in 2012.
For many years, the festival took place on the Thursday two days before the Sumida River Fireworks Festival, serving as a precursor to Tokyo’s major summer fireworks events. From 2013, it shifted to the Saturday one week before the Sumida River Fireworks Festival, maintaining its role as the opening act for Tokyo’s significant fireworks festivals.
In 2020, the festival was scheduled for May 30 as part of efforts to generate excitement for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was canceled. Subsequent editions in 2021 and beyond were also canceled. The festival is set to resume in 2023 with the 45th edition after a hiatus of three years since the 41st edition held in 2019.
