Aizu tajima gion sai 2024
The Aizu Tajima Gion Festival is an annual festival held over three days, from July 22nd to 24th, in the Tajima area of Minamiaizu Town, Fukushima Prefecture. It takes place at the Tadeuga Shrine and Kumano Shrine. Ranked among Japan’s three major Gion festivals, alongside Kyoto Gion and Nakatsu-jima (Aichi), the festival attracts numerous visitors who come to enjoy the many stalls and four large floats.
During the festival, there are performances of children’s Kabuki on the floats, a procession known as Nanahokai carrying offerings to the gods, a mikoshi procession through the town, and on the final day, the dedication of Daidai O-kagura, a traditional Shinto dance, in the Kagura-den (sacred dance hall) of the shrine.
The origins of the Aizu Tajima Gion Festival date back to the Kamakura period during the reign of Lord Nagasuna Munemasa, who became the lord of this region in the Bunji era (1185–1189). It is said that he valued the Gion faith and held Gion festival ceremonies at the Tadeuga Shrine. The festival, as it is known today, was established during the Keicho era (1603) of the Edo period when a ritual similar to Kyoto’s Yasaka Shrine Gion Festival was introduced.
