Aoi Festival 2024

The Aoi Matsuri (葵祭, formally known as Kamo Matsuri) is an annual festival held at the Kamo Myojin Shrine (Shimogamo Shrine) and the Kamo Wake Ikazuchi Shrine (Kamigamo Shrine) in Kyoto. It takes place on May 15th (the Day of the Rooster in the fourth month of the lunar calendar). It is also known as the Northern Festival, contrasting with the Southern Festival held at the Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine. During the Heian period, when people referred to a “festival,” they were usually talking about the Aoi Matsuri.

Overview: It is one of the Three Chokusai Festivals along with the Iwashimizu Festival and the Kasuga Festival. Unlike the Gion Matsuri, which is a festival for the common people, the Aoi Matsuri originated as an event conducted by the Kamo clan and the imperial court, eventually evolving into a festival attended by aristocrats. It is one of Kyoto’s three major festivals and has been celebrated as a national event since the Heian period, representing one of the few traditions of the imperial court’s customs in Japanese festivals.
