Asakusa Shrine ReitaiSai “Sanja Matsuri” 2024
The Sanja Matsuri, or Three Shrine Festival, is one of Japan’s most representative festivals, held in the Asakusa area of Tokyo, particularly centered around the 44 towns associated with Asakusa Shrine. Taking place over three days from the third Saturday in May, it is renowned for its vibrant and spectacular mikoshi (portable shrine) processions, reflecting both the Edo-period charm and the energetic and lively spirit of Tokyo.
Considered Asakusa’s most lively time of the year, the festival attracts approximately 1.8 million people. The first day kicks off with a grand procession called “Daigyoretsu,” featuring traditional festival floats, music carts, performances by geisha groups, and various dances. The Shinto dance known as “Shinji Binzasara Mai,” designated as an intangible cultural property by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, is also dedicated.
On the second day, the main festival ceremony, “Reisai Shiki,” is conducted, followed by the “Chochin Mikoshi” parade, where around 100 portable shrines from the 44 Asakusa neighborhoods gather at the shrine for purification rituals before proceeding through the streets.
The final day sees the “Miya-iri,” the early morning departure of the three main mikoshi called “Ichinomiya,” “Ninomiya,” and “Sannomiya.” Throughout the day, these mikoshi are carried through the neighborhoods in three directions, returning to the shrine grounds in the evening for the “Miya-iri” ceremony, marking the conclusion of the festival.
During the festival period, Asakusa comes alive with a festive atmosphere. In addition to the shrine ceremonies, various traditional dances are performed in the shrine precincts and the Kagura Hall. The Sanja Matsuri is not only a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Asakusa but also a significant and captivating spectacle that represents the beginning of early summer in Tokyo.
