Bukeyashiki Sakura When 2024
In Kakunodate, Semboku City, Akita Prefecture, there is a street lined with samurai residences where weeping cherry blossoms (shidarezakura) bloom. Among these, 162 trees are designated as a National Natural Monument.
The origin of Kakunodate’s shidarezakura can be traced back to three cherry blossom saplings brought by the second head of the Satake clan, Yoshiaki’s wife, as part of her dowry from the Sannjo Nishi family in Kyoto during her marriage. In Kakunodate’s samurai district, there are two types of cherry blossoms: shidarezakura and somei yoshino. The shidarezakura beautifully contrasts with the blackboard fences of the samurai residences, while the somei yoshino creates a cherry blossom tunnel along the 2 km stretch of the Hinokinai River embankment.
Kakunodate hosts a cherry blossom festival, during which both the shidarezakura in the samurai district and the somei yoshino along the Hinokinai River embankment are illuminated. The Kakunodate Cherry Blossom Festival in 2023 took place from April 20 (Thursday) to May 5 (National Holiday). Additionally, the Sister City and Cooperative Exchange City Products Exhibition was held from April 22 (Saturday) to April 23 (Sunday).
