Fukushima Taimatsu Akashi 2024
“Taimatsu Akashi” – A Tradition of Over 430 Years
“Taimatsu Akashi” is one of Japan’s three major fire festivals, continuing for more than 430 years. It takes place on the second Saturday of November.
The origin of this festival dates back over 430 years when the people gathered with torches to defend Suga Kawa Castle during the siege by Date Masamune. Over the years, the festival evolved to honor the spirits of those who fought in wars.
The colossal torches weigh an impressive 3 tons and measure 10 meters in length. Each of the 30 massive torches is carried by a group of 150 young participants, parading through the streets to finally stand them on Goro-san, a local mountain, and set them ablaze. Accompanied by the powerful beats of the Taimatsu Taiko drums, the torches are ignited, enveloping the mountainside in vibrant red flames. The spectacle of these torches lighting up the late autumn night sky is truly awe-inspiring!
