Hama rikyu Gardens Autumn leaves best time to see 2024
Experience vivid autumn foliage in a historic garden dating back to the Edo period:
Designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and a Special Historic Site, the Tokyo Metropolitan Hamarikyu Gardens is a daimyo garden with tidal ponds and two duck hunting grounds that has been in existence since the Edo period. From mid-November to early December, visitors can enjoy the autumn colors of approximately 260 trees, including Japanese maples, hornbeams, cherry blossoms, and firs, around the tidal ponds and four tea houses throughout the garden. It’s a chance to appreciate the scenic beauty of autumn in a garden with ties to the Tokugawa Shogunate, right in the heart of the city.
Highlights:
The faithfully restored “Matsu no Ochaya” (Pine Tea House), “Tsubame no Ochaya” (Swallow Tea House), and “Taka no Ochaya” (Hawk Tea House) provide picturesque settings that perfectly complement the autumn foliage. At the reconstructed “Nakajima no Ochaya,” visitors can enjoy a matcha and Japanese sweets set (for a fee). From October 25 (Wednesday) to October 29 (Sunday), the “Moon-Viewing Stroll at Hamarikyu – Admiring the Kuri Meigetsu in the Shogun’s Garden” event will take place, featuring evening illuminations during the period.
