Hibiya park Autumn leaves best time to see 2024
An oasis in the business district:
Originally the residence of daimyo such as the Matsudaira Hizen-no-kami until the end of the Edo period, it later became a military training ground during the Meiji era. Subsequently planned, designed, and created as the “urban park,” it emerged as Japan’s first modern Western-style park. The flower beds bloom with vibrant seasonal flowers year-round, providing a place for relaxation for those working in the business district. The Ginkgo tree-lined path, designed in an S-shape according to the original 1903 (Meiji 36) layout, displays stunning autumn foliage. The Cloud-Shaped Pond features a crane-shaped fountain and is considered the third oldest fountain in Japan among urban parks. The park showcases beautiful cherry blossoms in spring and impressive autumn foliage from gingko trees and Japanese maples in autumn to winter.
Highlights:
The “Neck Gambling Ginkgo,” a large tree with an anecdote about the park’s designer, Dr. Shiroku Honda, risking his life to successfully transplant it. The autumn foliage around the Crane Fountain Pond is also a sight to behold.
