Iizaka kenka Matsuri 2024

The Iizaka Kenka Matsuri (Iizaka Fighting Festival) is the autumn festival of the Iizaka Hachimangu Shrine in Iizaka-machi, Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture. It takes place over three days, centered around the first Saturday of October, and is considered one of Japan’s three major “Kenka Matsuri” or fighting festivals. The town of Iizaka is divided into six districts: Kamimachi Festival Office, Takinokawa Festival Office, Wakakinu Festival Office, Tatsuna Festival Office, Yokomachi Festival Office, and Sodoflower Festival Office. Each district’s float travels through the hot spring town during the three days of the festival, including the Eve festival, main festival, and after festival.

The Kenka Matsuri: The autumn festival, which has preserved a tradition of over 300 years, originally served as a festival to pray to the war god for victory in battles. Over time, it has transformed into a festival expressing gratitude to the gods for bountiful harvests and praying for the prosperity of the local residents and worshipers.
