Isurugi Hikiyama Matsuri 2024
石動曳山祭り (Isurugi Hikiyama Matsuri) is an annual festival held on April 29th in the Isurugi district of Oyabe City, Toyama Prefecture. It is one of the three major festivals in Oyabe and represents the spring festival of the Isurugi Atago Shrine, which has been held since the mid-Edo period.
During this festival, there are 11 beautifully decorated floats (yama) and three portable shrines (mikoshi) processions. Eleven lavish and ornate Hana-yama floats, showcasing the essence of art and craftsmanship from the Momoyama period, parade through the town accompanied by traditional festival music.
The Hana-yama floats were constructed during the Hoei era (1751–1763) to the Ansei era (1854–1860). The wooden structures were built by carpenters from Noto and Kaga, carvings were done by sculptors from Inami, painting by lacquer artisans from Johanna, and metalwork by goldsmiths from Takaoka.
Held in Isurugi, which thrived as a vital point along the old Hokuriku Kaido highway, this festival is a representative event for Oyabe City, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region.
