Jigokudani Monkey Park Best time 2023 ~ 2024

The Jigokudani Monkey Park, located in Yamanouchi Town, Shimotakai District, Nagano Prefecture, has operating hours that vary with the seasons. During the summer months (around April to October), the park is open from around 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, while in the winter months (around November to March), the hours are approximately from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The park does not have regular closing days.

It’s important to note that the operating hours are subject to change without notice due to factors such as weather conditions, seasons, and the behavior of the monkeys.

Established in 1964, the Jigokudani Monkey Park tamed a group of cautious monkeys to reduce damage to apple farms without exterminating them. Widely loved around the world, the park allows people to observe the fascinating behavior of Japanese macaques up close, including their famous habit of bathing in hot springs.

Located in the northern part of Nagano Prefecture, within the Joshinetsu Kogen National Park, the monkeys that visit the Jigokudani Monkey Park are well-known for soaking in hot springs during the winter. From December to around April, about a quarter of the year is covered in deep snow, and the harsh environment can see temperatures drop below minus 10 degrees Celsius. If you want to witness the monkeys enjoying the hot springs, this winter period is the ideal time to visit.
