Kawagoe Hikawa Festival 2024
The Kawagoe Hikawa Festival, held at the Hikawa Shrine in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture, is an annual festival that takes place on the third Sunday of October and the preceding Saturday (except when October 14th and 15th are both Saturday and Sunday). It is commonly referred to as the Kawagoe Matsuri. Alongside the Jingu Gaien Ichiya Matsuri in Ibaraki and the Sawaara no Taue Odori in Sodegaura, it is often recognized as one of the three major festivals in the Kanto region. The festival, which has been celebrated for over 360 years, attracts over 800,000 attendees over the course of the two days.
This longstanding festival has been designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. In 2016, it was also registered as part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage under the category of “Yama, Hoko, Yatai, float festivals in Japan.”
