Hote Festival 2026

The Hote Festival of Shiogama Shrine—one of Japan’s Three Great Aramikoshi (wild portable shrines)—is a spring ritual of the Ōshū Ichinomiya, Shiogama Shrine.
It originally began as a New Year mikoshi-washing ritual known as a fire-prevention festival, but later, due to its connection with the sea, came to be called the Hote Festival.
Today, the mikoshi (portable shrine) parades through the city, praying for warding off evil and prosperity.
