Kiryu Yakibushi Matsuri 2024

The largest event in Kiryu City, the “Kiryu Yagibushi Festival,” envelops the city in excitement and fervor with the participation of numerous tourists from both inside and outside the prefecture, as well as local residents eagerly anticipating this day.

The heart-pounding and lively atmosphere of the Kiryu Yagibushi Festival is fueled by the energetic performances of the “Yagibushi,” a traditional local dance. Many groups take to the floats (yagura) to showcase their well-honed singing voices and musical skills. Surrounding these floats are the dancers, both from organized groups and enthusiastic individuals. One of the charms of Yagibushi dancing is its casual nature, welcoming anyone to join in at any time. Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or a first-timer, it’s easy to pick up and enjoy the dance. The roots of the Kiryu Yagibushi Festival and its central pillar can be traced back to the Kiryu Gion Festival. With a history of over 360 years, this traditional festival carries a mysterious radiance and is celebrated in an elegant and refined manner. The festival is adorned with large banners fluttering in the wind, beautifully crafted floats from each town, and one of the Kanto region’s largest halberds (hoko). Festival music adds to the lively atmosphere, making it an auditory delight.
