Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine Sakura best time 2024
In Nachikatsuura Town, Higashimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture, at Kumano Nachi Taisha, cherry blossoms bloom in spring. Within the shrine grounds, various cherry tree varieties such as the notable Yamazakura “Hidetada Sakura,” Weeping Cherry Blossoms (Shidarezakura), and Double-flowered Cherry Blossoms (Yaezakura) add vibrant colors to the scenery.
The cherry blossoms are typically in full bloom from early to mid-April each year. Weeping Cherry Blossoms bloom from late March to early April, while the Hidetada Sakura blooms from mid to late April.
On April 14th, the “Sakura Hana Matsuri” (Cherry Blossom Festival) is held, inspired by the story of Emperor Hanazono (Hana no San), a former Emperor who abdicated and became a monk, expressing gratitude for the blessings of nature and praying for a bountiful harvest. During this festival, the chief priest and shrine attendants adorn their ceremonial hats with cherry blossom branches.
