Kurama Fire Festival 2025
The Kurama Fire Festival, held annually on October 22, is one of Kyoto’s three most unusual festivals. This dramatic and beautiful fire event fills the mountain village of Kurama with blazing torches and shouts of tradition.
Its origin dates back to 940 (Tengyō 3), when villagers welcomed Yuki Daimyojin, transferred from the Imperial Palace to Kurama, by carrying the local deity Hachisho Myojin on a mikoshi and greeting them with countless torches. Today, the festival centers around Yuki Shrine and the Kurama Street leading to it, where the whole area is illuminated by fire and filled with vigorous chants of “Saireya Sairyo.”
