Minami Koshigaya Awa Odori festival 2024
The Minami-Koshigaya Awa Odori is an Awa Odori (traditional dance) held annually in late August in Minami-Koshigaya, Koshigaya City, Saitama Prefecture. Alongside the “Tokushima City Awa Odori” and the “Tokyo Koenji Awa Odori,” it is sometimes considered one of Japan’s three major Awa Odori festivals and, along with the “Tokyo Koenji Awa Odori” and the “Kanagawa Yamato Awa Odori,” is counted among the three major Awa Odori festivals in the Kanto region.
The inaugural event took place on August 24, 1985, attracting approximately 30,000 attendees. In subsequent years, the festival has seen participation from over 6,000 dancers and around 700,000 spectators annually. In recent years, local dance groups have also organized pre-festival and encore Awa Odori events in late July and mid-September, respectively, at nearby venues such as Minami-Koshigaya Station, Koshigaya City Community Center, and Aeon Lake Town.
While Awa Odori is typically a form of street dancing, the Minami-Koshigaya Awa Odori distinguishes itself by incorporating both street dancing and stage performances. The street dancing begins at 17:10, while the stage performances commence earlier at 14:00 as part of the first segment.
