Nabekanmuri festivai 2024

The “Nabekanmuri Matsuri” (Nabekanmuri Festival) is a traditional festival held annually on May 3rd at Chikuma Shrine in Maibara City, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. The name “Nabekanmuri Matsuri” is derived from the practice of women wearing pots on their heads during the procession.

This festival is considered one of the three major eccentric festivals in Japan and has been celebrated for over a millennium, with roots tracing back to the Heian period. It was widely known in the capital city during that time and is even mentioned in the “Ise Monogatari” (Tales of Ise). Designated as an intangible folk cultural asset of Maibara City, Nabekanmuri Matsuri has deep cultural and historical significance.

There are various theories about the origin of the festival, but according to the “Chikuma Daigonnokoto” passed down at Chikuma Shrine, it states, “The pot crown signifies girls under the age of fifteen.” On the day of the festival, eight girls aged eight according to the traditional Japanese counting method, dressed in hunting attire and wearing papier-mâché pots on their heads, participate in a procession along with around 300 people in total, making it a unique and captivating event.
