Onuma Lake Festival 2024

This is a traditional summer event that has been held for over 100 years, representing Lake Ōnuma since the year 1906. The festival originated when a local Buddhist priest floated lanterns on the lake surface to pray for the souls of those who had experienced water-related accidents. Annually, a memorial service is conducted, commemorating victims of water accidents, newly departed individuals, ancestral remembrance, and even pet remembrance. Accompanied by poetic verses, memorial lanterns are floated onto the lake during this solemn ceremony.

In addition to the memorial service, various events take place for families to enjoy, including a fireworks display over Lake Ōnuma. The lantern floating activity is open to all participants, and interested individuals can sign up in advance or on the day of the event at the venue.

The 115th Lake Ōnuma Water Festival:

• Date: July 27th (Saturday) – 28th (Sunday), 2024

On the 27th, the traditional memorial service and lantern floating will take place, followed by a fireworks display on the 28th. Please note that on the day of the fireworks display, the promenade will be closed to pedestrians in the afternoon.
