Sanno Matsuri 2024

The “Sanno Matsuri” (山王祭) is an annual festival held at the Hie Shrine in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo. The festival takes place from June 7th to 17th in the year 2024.

The “Sanno Matsuri” is considered one of the three major festivals in Edo (old Tokyo) and is included among Japan’s three major festivals, alongside the Gion Matsuri in Kyoto and the Tenjin Matsuri in Osaka.

At Hie Shrine, the “Sanno Matsuri” occurs every June. The festival alternates between the main festival (“Hon Matsuri”) and the shadow festival (“Kage Matsuri”) every other year, with the main festival held in even-numbered years and the shadow festival in odd-numbered years.

The “Sanno Matsuri” is not a single festival held on a specific day but a collective term for over 20 events that take place, primarily centered around the annual festival on June 15th. This festival is deeply rooted in the history and traditions of Tokyo and is a significant cultural event that attracts locals and visitors alike.
